In this case, we’re working on a 2018 Jeep Compass equipped with the factory Engine Start-Stop (ESS) system. Mileage wasn’t a major factor here, but this type of issue typically shows up as the vehicle ages a few years and components begin to wear.

I disconnected the negative terminal to isolate it and hooked up my tester. The result came back solid—around 680 cold cranking amps, which is right where it should be.

At this point, I’ve ruled out the main battery as the cause.

Next, I shifted my focus to the auxiliary battery.

Here’s where the process matters.

Instead of tearing things apart unnecessarily, I repositioned my tester:

  • Ground lead connected to the disconnected negative cable

  • Positive lead connected directly to the auxiliary battery positive post

Now we’re testing the auxiliary battery in isolation.

And this is where the problem revealed itself immediately.

The battery was so dead that it wouldn’t even power up the tester.

No voltage. No response. Completely flat.

That’s a clear and definitive failure.

At this point, there’s no reason to go further down the diagnostic path. No need to chase wiring, modules, or software issues.

We’ve found the root cause.

The auxiliary battery was completely dead.

Not weak. Not borderline. Fully discharged to the point of being non-functional.

This is one of the most common causes of ESS failure in vehicles like the 2018 Jeep Compass.

The fix here is straightforward:

Replace the auxiliary battery.

Once replaced, the system should return to normal operation, assuming no additional issues are present.

But in most real-world scenarios, replacing the aux battery resolves the issue completely.
