Easter Morning, One Year Later: A Story About Faith, a Father, and Not Leaving Your Son Behind

It’s Easter morning, 2026.

The sun hasn’t fully come up yet. The world is quiet. Still.

Nathaniel and I just finished our own little sunrise service out on the porch. Nothing fancy—just the two of us, a moment of gratitude, and the kind of peace you don’t get in the middle of a busy day.

He’s gone back inside now.

And I’m out here in the garage, thinking.

Because this morning reminds me of another morning—exactly one year ago.

The Morning Everything Changed

Last Easter, I woke up at 4 a.m.

Not by accident. Not by alarm.

I truly believe God woke me up.

Clear as anything, I felt it: “Go outside.”

So I did.

I walked out of the house around 5 a.m.—about the same time I would’ve been getting ready to leave for a new job I had just been offered at a large used car company. I had already been hired as a diagnostic technician.

But my son Nathaniel… hadn’t.

He had interviewed for a position and didn’t get it.

And that had been weighing on me heavy all weekend.

Do I take this job… because we need the money?

Or do I stay behind and figure something else out—so I don’t leave my son sitting at home?

A Walk Down the Driveway

That morning, I walked down the back sidewalk.

Everything was quiet. Still. Almost surreal.

I walked all the way out to my car, just like I was getting ready to leave for work.

And then it hit me.

If I took that job, this would be my life.

I’d be walking out here every morning… while Nathaniel stayed inside.

Still in bed.

Left behind.

And right there in that driveway, I made a decision that would change everything.

I said it out loud:

“I ain’t gonna do it.”

A Father’s Decision

I went back inside.

Later that morning, Nathaniel woke up, and I told him what happened.

I told him, “I’m not taking the job—not without you. We’ve been on this journey together since you graduated high school in 2022. I’m not leaving you behind. We’re going to figure this out together.”

And that was that.

No backup plan.

Just faith—and a decision.

One More Shot

I reached back out to the recruiter.

I told him the truth.

I said, “My son may not interview well, but I know who he is. If you give him a chance, he’ll prove himself.”

To his credit, the recruiter listened.

He gave Nathaniel another opportunity—this time for a different position.

Nathaniel went in, did the interview, and got the job.

And just like that…

We were both in.

A Year Later

Now here we are.

Easter morning, one year later.

And I can tell you—it turned out better than I ever imagined.

Nathaniel didn’t just get a job.

He found his place.

He ended up moving into a role in the photo department—something that fits him even better than what we originally planned.

And since then?

He’s grown.

A lot.

He’s earned two raises.

He’s been recognized for his safety practices.

He’s respected by his coworkers and managers.

He’s made friends.

And maybe one of my favorite parts…

He discovered ping pong.

They’ve got a table in the break room, and he started playing during breaks and lunch.

Now he loves it.

I mean really loves it.

So much so that we’re starting to explore just how far he might want to take it.

For the first time, he’s found something that’s his.

More Than Just a Job

But this story isn’t really about a job.

It’s about a young man learning how to:

Get up early
Show up every day
Work hard
Earn money
Save money
And become who he’s meant to be

Nathaniel lives in the realm of autism—high functioning—but still facing challenges that most people don’t see.

And watching him grow through this past year…

It’s been one of the greatest blessings of my life.

What I Want You to Take From This

If you’re reading this today, I want you to hear me clearly:

Never give up on your children.

Especially the ones who may need a little more patience… a little more belief… a little more time.

They are not broken.

They are not behind.

They are God’s gift.

And sometimes, all it takes is one decision…

One moment of faith…

One refusal to leave them behind…

To completely change the direction of their life.

Full Circle

This morning, standing out here again on Easter…

I can still see that driveway.

I can still feel that moment.

But now, instead of uncertainty…

There’s gratitude.

God knew exactly what He was doing.

And I’m thankful I listened.

If this story encouraged you, share it with someone who needs it.

You never know whose life might change because you did.
