Vehicle Overview
The 2021 Dodge Durango is a modern SUV loaded with electronics, including an automatic start-stop system designed to improve fuel efficiency. What many people don’t realize is that this system depends heavily on two batteries, not just one.
That’s where things get interesting.
Vehicle Concern
The primary complaint was simple:
The auto start-stop system was not functioning, and a message appeared on the dash indicating it was unavailable.
No other major symptoms were present. The vehicle started fine, drove fine, and had no noticeable electrical issues.
This is a classic example of how subtle symptoms can still point to a real problem.
Initial Inspection
When diagnosing car problems like this, I always start with the basics.
No warning lights beyond the start-stop message. No obvious electrical faults. No signs of corrosion or loose connections.
At this point, a lot of people would jump straight into scanning modules or replacing parts. That’s where experience comes in—you need to understand how the system works before you test it.

A main battery
An auxiliary battery
If either one isn’t performing properly, the system shuts down.
Codes (If Applicable)
In this case, there were no critical fault codes driving the concern. That’s another reason this type of issue gets overlooked.

Diagnostic Process
This is where real automotive troubleshooting begins.
Knowing this system uses dual batteries, I went straight to testing both. On the Durango, both batteries are located under the passenger front seat.
First step: isolate the batteries.
I disconnected the negative cable from the main battery and tested it independently. The result came back at 573 cold cranking amps, which is within a healthy operating range for that battery.
So right away, I knew the main battery wasn’t the issue.
Next, I moved on to the auxiliary battery.
Instead of guessing, I used the same testing method—connecting directly to the isolated circuit to get an accurate reading.
This battery tested at 152 cold cranking amps.
That’s a fail. No question about it.
At that level, the battery simply cannot support the demands of the start-stop system. Even though the vehicle still starts and runs fine, the system is smart enough to disable itself when it detects insufficient reserve capacity.
That’s exactly what we were seeing.
Key Findings
The main battery tested good and was not contributing to the issue.
The auxiliary battery failed load testing and was well below acceptable specifications.
The start-stop system was disabled as a result of insufficient battery performance.
Final Diagnosis
Failed auxiliary battery causing the auto start-stop system to become unavailable.
Replacement of the auxiliary battery is required to restore proper system function.
