How to install Soffit Vents

Hey Folks, the video above is the one that really got my youtube account going. I shot this one last July while installing some soffit vents at a job I was working on. We filmed it in one take, straight off the cuff from a cell phone. This video is not the best quality and the audio is very low. The video just reached 10,000 views over the Christmas holidays. The video is titled “how to install soffit vents” and the reason I’m posting this video on my blog is so I can explain in greater detail on how to perform this project. I do intend on filming some better quality and more detailed videos on soffit vents in the future.
Lets get to it!!!!! First of all there are two basic types of soffit vents…the continuous run type which is what I’m showing in the video and the individual panel type. I will stick to the basic procedure for the continuous run type since that’s what our video was depicting.

Step 1, on the bottom side of the boxing blocks measure the distance from the freeze board over to the end of the ribbon or rafter tail if the structure doesn’t have an outer ribbon. Find the center point and make a mark. Now make a mark half the width of the soffit vent (which is approximately 1 inch) toward the freeze board against the house.

Step 2, From that second mark measure over to the edge of the ribbon. Lets say its 12 inches. Go to the other end of the boxing and measure 12 inches from the edge of the ribbon toward the center of the boxing block. Put a mark there.

Step 3, Chalk a line from the each mark you just made along the bottom of the boxing blocks.

Step 4, Now you cut your 3/8” plywood and nail it to the area between the freeze board and the line that you chalked. Go ahead and cut it a little narrower than needed. Make sure the outside edge of the plywood has a good straight cut and is positioned on the line you chalked. This will insure that your soffit vents will look straight all the way down the house.

Step 5, Nail your plywood in place but don’t nail near the edge where the chalk line is until the vent is slipped into place.

Step 6, Slide each section of soffit vent into place under the lip of the plywood and nail with a crown stapler.

Step 7, After the soffit vents are in place its time to cut and nail up the outer pieces of plywood. When that’s finished your ready to install your new fascia board and trim out the gap against the freeze board and plywood. Caulk, prime, paint, and you have a finished project……….thanks for stopping by folks, take care

How to keep from being SCAMMED by www.sub4sub.com

Hi there Folks! SUB4SUB dotcom appears to be a scam. Here is the story of what happened to me. I have a you tube account in which I post “How to” and music videos. Any youtube user is always looking for more subscribers, Right? I know I would love to have more subs. Anyway, I kept getting these e-mails through my youtube inbox from what appeared to be other youtube account holders telling me that they really loved my channel and that I should go to this website called sub4sub.com to be put on a list in hopes of getting more subscribers.
After getting these types of e-mails several times I decided to visit the site and check it out. To sign up I was prompted to put in my name and cell phone number so that they could text me a code to proceed further with registration. OK so I did that, and after punching in the code on the website the screen locked up. I attempted this action one more time and the screen looked up again. I then received a few random text on my cell phone advertising some ring tones or something. At the bottom of the text it gave me the option to “Stop” sending text. The text stopped right away and I didn’t think anymore about the situation until I received my latest cell phone bill. I had $25.00 of extra charges tacked onto my bill. Needless to say I was pissed and ready to strangle somebody….LOL
I called my cell phone carrier and spoke to a representative and he took care of the charges and he also told me the same thing had happened to him through a face book app. I was very happy to get these charges removed from my bill and I also learned a lesson that I wanted to share with you good folks. Don’t ever give type in your cell phone number on any website unless you are sure it legit. So Yes, It appears that SUB4SUB dot com is a scam and folks should stay away from this site and delete any emails you may receive through youtube as well as reporting the user sending them. Mazda Millenia code PO300 FIXED

This 2000 Mazda Millenia had a rough idle and code PO300 stored in the ECM or computer. Being an ASE Master tech you would think this would be an easy one to repair. Right? No!!!This car made me wanna push my toolbox over a cliff and say “the hell with cars” “I’d rather be a greeter at Walmart” LOL.
Anyway, All jokes aside….First, I removed a sparkplug for inspection. Plug was worn and looked original so I installed a new set of plugs and cleared the code. I took the vehicle on a test drive and the Check engine lamp popped right back on when the vehicle came to a stop. I cleared the code again and then noticed that a drive was not even necessary to trigger the lamp. The lamp would pop right back on at idle. I performed a brake torque test to see if the engine would stumble under load. No misfire at all nor did I notice a dead miss earlier when I drove the vehicle. I then checked the air intake hose for cracks, splits etc. No problem found! I then used a can of starter fluid to spray all around the intake manifold and vacuum lines for possible vacuum leaks. No leaks were found.
At this point I’m beginning to scratch my head and seriously consider lubing up the wheels on that toolbox to get ready for its trip off the cliff….LOL
I then Google this issue on the net and visit a few Mazda forums. These forums are great but I can tell that most of the folks posting answers to problems are not really technicians. It was a lot of replace this and if that don’t work replace this too and so on. I also checked some bulletins on Mitchell, All Data, and Idenifix. There was a few bulletins that spoke of these Mazda engines building carbon on the valves due to high grade gasoline and causing a rough idle.There was a bulletin on cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor to cure a rough idle as well.
After gathering this information I went back to the shop and performed a carbon blast on the engine and I also cleaned the mass air flow sensor and the throttle body. None of this fixed the vehicle!!!!
I called a few Technician friends that have there own shops and a few buddies from Carmax that I use to work with. I had already performed all there recommendations. After putting a blurb on face book in search of a Mazda tech I got a phone number to a local Mazda specialist that had his own shop. After a few minutes on the phone and explaining the issue he said that the timing belt could have skipped a tooth. He had been a Mazda tech for 15 years at a local dealership and had seen that problem before. He told me to bring it down and he could check it in about twenty minutes and find out if that’s the case. After his inspection, it was determined that the belt had jumped a few teeth.
I got the car back to my shop and after approval from my customer I installed a new timing belt and tensioner. After reassembly the care idled perfect and check engine light stayed off.
During the process of replacing the timing belt I found pieces of an old power steering belt that had been wrapped around the crank inside the timing cover. I believe this was probably what caused the belt to jump time. The timing covers on these 2.5 liters are basically open behind the crank pulley so I makes its easy for debris to enter this area. So if you ever run across this problem on a Mazda 2.5liter engine, don’t rule out camshaft timing. Make sure you check this before replacing a bunch of unnecessary parts……Check out the video attached with this blog as well. Have a great day and thanks for visiting my blog. Take care!

Hey Folks, the video above is a song written and performed by yours truly (Bobby Whiteside). I wrote this song for my dad many years ago. I believe it was in 1991 when I finished it, played and sang it to him on his birthday. The song tells the story of how I felt growing up the son of a police officer. In my eyes he truly is a man that walked tall for the law and his family. He has always been my biggest hero and rock I’ve often leaned on over the years.
I got the opportunity to play and sing this song on WSOC station 103.7 during the morning show back in 1996 for fathers day. That was a very proud moment for me. I recently decided to put this song out there on youtube so that others could enjoy it also. I hope you folks like it and thank you for taking the time to listen to this heartfelt song….take care
